At least, that’s what Double Fine should have called it. Instead, they chose Happy Action Theater. Which is just as well, because my creative genius demands large sums of money.

Speaking of large sums of money, did you hear Tim Schafer single-handedly raised more than $1 million American dollars in 24 hours? I can only contribute this to the purchase of Happy Action Theater I made. Karma!

The Kinect has been simultaneously exciting and disappointing for me. I don’t find myself popping in many Kinect games lately. It is physically taxing, and it means I have to clear my living room floor of toys and a random assortment of other objects. It’s actually a time sink for relatively little game play, and with my busy schedule I just find myself passing on it more often than not.

I try to encourage my son to play it, though, especially since it’s winter. He asks me to go outside, ride his bicycle, run around, but the truth is we haven’t gotten much snow, and it’s too damn cold.

Enter the Kinect.

My son is 5 years old, so his attention span for things is short. That, coupled with his autism can hyper-focus him, so it makes it difficult to get him to play a game, much less play a game for more than 5 minutes. Though, when he does find a game he actually likes to play, he can play it for hours.

So when my husband and I downloaded Happy Action Theater, we decided to try it out while our son was at school.

It turns out we loved it.

Even our dog wanted to play.

Obviously, the game was designed for children in mind. But it was definitely designed for adults, too. There is no real point to the game, other than to jump around and have fun.

And clone yourself.

There are several “mini-games”, if you will. In one, you get to feed some pigeons. They fly to you and will land on you. You can brush them off, or throw seeds at them. In another, you are underwater and must catch things dangling from a hook, lest you be pulled up to the surface. In still another, you are a monster terrorizing a city, bashing down buildings and punching airplanes, à la King Kong.

Some of the mini-games have a retro game feel. My favorite is one in which you are a butterfly and must shoot insects descending upon you, à la Space Invaders. The music is upbeat, catchy and whimsical. The graphics evoke a retro feel, but don’t let that fool you – the body tracking power of Happy Action Theater really stands out. There is no guesswork involved. If you want to punch a balloon, it knows exactly where your fist is in relation to aforementioned balloon. The physics are probably one of the most advanced I’ve seen in a Kinect game. Everything is fluid, which makes the pick-up-and-play experience fulfilling.

In superb Schaefer fashion, the achievements are entertaining as well. I don’t want to spoil anything, because honestly the moment it happened was so intensely amazing, you would hate me ruining it for you. I will only say you can act out a death scene of a popular 80′s action movie, and you will get an achievement for it.

Not Pictured: Death Scene

If you have small children, or even if you are an adult and love to jump around, be prepared to clear your living room floor. The Kinect has a pretty ridiculous area of play, but Happy Action Theater will take up an enormous amount of room to stomp, kick, punch, and dance with up to 6 players. So you know what that means: Drunk Happy Action Theater Party!

My son is always drunk before he plays the Kinect.

At 800 MSP, it’s not likely to break the bank, and we’ve certainly seen a return on our investment. The money is more than worth the hours of action, laughter and magic it brings to our family.

I have a confession to make: I am rapidly approaching my 30th birthday. In actuality, it’s only two years off, but I can feel its oppressive weight looming somewhere near those fine lines I didn’t notice years prior. What happened to my youth? Am I happy with how I have spent my third decade?

The majority of my 20′s has been spent child rearing. For some, that is the zenith. Once you push a child through your body or, in my case, have a child surgically removed from your abdomen (you’re welcome), everything else just kind of wanes. Once they have left the comfort of your womb, you begin to live vicariously through your flesh and blood, and experience childhood, again; their disappointments become yours, their happiness becomes yours, but with the emotional intensity of a branding iron searing your flesh.

The first time I experienced this was on my son’s first day of school. I had been a stay-at-home mom for his whole life, and consequently, he never left my side. We had practiced putting on his backpack, parading around the house with it, walking down to the bus stop and back. But nothing could prepare either of us for that first bus ride. He ascended the steps, tears in his eyes, and the doors closed. I waved frantically, blowing him kisses as the bus faded out of sight, shuffled slowly back inside, and wept.

My baby was growing up.

Which is why it pisses me off when I play anything on XBL.

What does this have to with motherhood, you ask? Because those little 12 year olds calling you a “fag” or a “bitch” used to be 4 year old preschoolers with promising futures. Now, they are nothing but bullies with anonymity in their arsenal, and ready to barrage your cochleas with bullshit such as you have never experienced in your life.

My father worked with computers for all of my life, and most of his. Remember Dwango? I do. It wasn’t my first time using DOS. I was probably around 9 years old and was heavily into Doom. It was my first love affair with a game, and my first foray into online gaming. Since we resided in Houston, we had an edge above the competition. My father would boast of having played with John Romero, even though his ass was handed to him like a plate of Texas BBQ (remember how I said I miss Texas? BBQ is probably at the top of that list).

I spent a lot of time playing games with my father. He was ruthless. Over battle.net Diablo, players would rage quit games with us before “rage quit” was even a meme. ”Don’t take any prisoners, Jas. And for God’s sake, if you’re going to destroy your enemy, destroy them completely“, he would tell me when my 12 year old mind became too merciful.

He taught me to win, but most of all, he taught me respect. I do not take failure lightly. To this day, my husband will not play any competitive game with me, lest I ignore him for days when I do not win. It’s a flaw, to be sure, but you will be hard pressed to find me flinging racial or sexist slurs at other players. The XBL world is like a constant streaming of YouTube comments. Most of these children, or adults for that matter, hide behind a facade because the internet breeds this misconception that the people on the other end are not, in actuality, people.

But they are.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have played a game online that didn’t do well. It wasn’t a “smash hit” by any means, but enough people played and enjoyed it, and we have formed a community; actually, it’s more than a community – it’s family. We have lost members to diseases, mourned them, celebrated major life events, laughed with each other, endured flame wars and I even met my husband through this community.

The point is – that is ancient history. We still talk to each other, but you would be hard pressed trying to find that camaraderie in today’s world. Everyone is out to be acerbic, ornery and have the biggest asshole. It’s why I don’t come out from under my rock very often. I don’t like being surrounded by negativity; I have enough problems of my own without wanting to shove my Xbox controller down people’s throats to make them shut up.

I guess my biggest point is – I’m getting old.

And you should get the hell off my lawn.

I don’t think I have made it a point to tell you a secret: I am female. I have done all the things normal women have done – reached puberty, perfected the art of applying liquid eyeliner, painted my nails, sewed my own skirt, pined for a certain boy, got married, birthed a child, etc. It is safe to say I know how to be a woman, simply because I am. Cogito ergo sum, but I am no Descartes.

I do know one thing for certain, though. Here’s what it is like to be a woman on the internet: be prepared for a barrage of sexual advances such as you have never seen. No matter what age, weight, height or even if, in fact, you are a woman. Most especially if you are a female gamer. Want to play a quick game of…anything? Too bad, because you’d rather stare at some stranger’s sack of balls, right? It’s only natural.

Even if you look past the riff-raff that seems to loiter about like a pack of starving wolves, you still have to contend with all the gaming companies pushing boobs into your face. Woman only want to motorboat other women’s breasts, right? I mean, that’s what happens when a gaggle of women drink wine and have sleepovers, right?

Do you see what I am doing here? Probably not. Have you read this far? Let me lay it down for you gently.

Stereotypes are everywhere, and none so prevalent as the world that exists inside the internet and video games. It is monstrously arrogant of anyone to assume that because they have produced a piece of something it is automatically X. This logic can pertain to anything. My parents formed me from a sperm and an egg. The cells divided for near on 9 months with a double X chromosome and thus I was born – a female. As a female I am thrust into a world where I am told what to think, feel, wear, eat, read, write, etc. And because of these things I do, or don’t do, I am either amazing or disgusting.

Take video games, for example. It is wholly alien to me that this modern world, with all its advancements, is still so sexist. I am not referring to the games themselves. No. I am referring to obtaining any enjoyment from them. I can thank my father for introducing me to video games. Here, I can parade around the internet and gaming servers as a woman, anytime I want, and feel empowered. No one thinks twice of the female gamer. She must have her life together. After all, women are expected to do everything and still have time for recreation. In a completely patriarchal world, she has found her niche and held her ground. Bravo! She has won at feminism.

A man, though? A man playing video games is something to be ostracized from society. Look at him wasting his time with something that cannot even bring monetary gain to any household! How is he supposed to support his family, if all he does is lounge about all day eating junk food and sitting in front of the television? How is he supposed to find a nice girl that will bear him children with all these video games?

That, my friends, is sexism. And we haven’t even gotten to the meat of the story yet.

I am not trying to bring any more discord between men and women, mind you. I am fairly certain a sort of gender utopia can exist. Not today, though.

Here in the video gaming world rests the sum of our creativity; blending art, writing and technology into an experience virtually anyone may enjoy. It is so avant-garde, it isn’t avant-garde and I’m not sure we will see the ripples of what they have done to our psyche for many years to come. Like most art (which encompasses all genres, not just imagery), it is a reflection on what we are feeling at this very moment as a whole. And it is a world mainly dominated by men. How ironic, I have mused in the past, that while women can create life with their bodies, men answer this by creating life with art. As a poet, I know their struggle and applaud their efforts.

Yes, even some of the most romantic scenes depicted; whether they be in art, books, or any other media, have been written by men. I do not wish to downplay the role of women in the creative world, but let me finish my point.

With this in mind, it is easy to point the finger at men when something offensive occurs. They are men; manly men set on exploiting women for personal gain. Can’t you hear them cackling as they take your money? All men ever want is one thing: sex. And from one gender: women. Leonardo Da Vinci painted a naked woman because he was a man! The scoundrel!

Nevermind the fact that Leonardo is speculated to have been homosexual. Or had painted a commission based upon a request. Or maybe he just felt like painting some breasts. Is there something inherently wrong with that?

I don’t think so.

There is a difference between being vulgar and being unobtrusive. Very often art likes to blur these lines, but if only to mirror the difference between cerebral appeal and sexual exploitation. And men are not solely to blame here; with many video games implementing character creation systems more and more, it is just as easy to make an unattractive character as it is to make an attractive one. Yet who of us gallivants around with an unattractive character? A small population, judging from my time on any given server.

There has been, and will invariably be, a socially constructed standard of beauty; particularly in regards to women. It is up to males, as much as females, to challenge these ideals.

~Jazfusion

“no one in this world can you trust. not men, not women, not beasts. this you can trust.”

Just nod if you can hear me.

Is there anyone home?

This will be an Atlas sized rant spawning from the very bowels of a conversation I overhead at my local GameStop. It went thus. It was a rainy day in June. I had taken a trip to my local mall with my family to spend some quality time looking through tall panels of glass at expensive things we don’t need. Naturally, one such stop was a local game store.

Upon entering the crowded lobby, a man, presumably of the 18-24 demographic, weaved his way up to the front. His faded baseball cap hung low over his eyes, shielding them from the artificial lighting beating down on his soft, alabaster skin. Limbs outstretched, they groped for the filthy melamine jutting out in front of him until he made clumsy contact. Steadying himself upright, he leaned with all his massive weight onto the counter; nodding a greeting to the squirrely employee standing at the ready.

“Hey bro, what’s new since Dragon Age 2?”

“I don’t know, man. But they just announced Halo 4 at E3″.

And that was the conversation in its entirety that forced me into a mental state of anguish not seen since I ran out of milk that one time after I poured my cereal into the bowl. Or that other time I was pregnant and someone decided to eat all my donettes.

We live in hard times.

Fortunately, though the grace of technology and science, people are still making video games. Notice, though, the plurality: “games”. As in more than one. A couple. A few. Tens. Hundreds. Thousands. Numerous. Billions and billions and so forth. The next time you go into a game store, look around you. Look at the advertisements. Look at the industrial plastic-coated wire shelving. Look at the contemporary double looped carpeting. Look at the wasted youths wraithing around in droves of gaunt-eyed splendor. Look in front of you. To the side. What are those beacons of plastic calling out to you in the night? Games.

Plural.

I hold fond memories of playing the first Halo. I had just graduated high school and with my graduation money purchased an Xbox along with some games.; among that purchase numbered Halo. It was perhaps a crime to have treated that piece of machinery like I did, but I was hooked.

To say that I never played Halo 2 would be an outright lie, and I would never partake in such an abhorrent act. But I never finished it, though not for lack of love. Halo 3 had me at the helm of a rogue Ghost again, laying down a thick blanket of plasma bolts. Firing rockets at seemingly unending waves of aggressors. And then it was over. Like seeing a lover for the last time – bittersweet and poignant.

And then life went on.

I was content to leave Master Chief floating in space, acting out his weird romance with Cortana. Knowing the universe was saved from The Flood. Still looking pretty fly in that green space armor that’s all the rage. Then those other Halo games paraded along without Master Chief and they were okay. Perhaps intending to fill the chasm that rent your heart in two.

And then at some point you knew they were going to resurrect Master Chief. The howling of the winds and the quorking of the ravens portended well for this omen; you could feel it stirring in your <del>loins</del> bones.

Then a sign from the heavens: validation and redemption. Halo 4 will be truth, soothsayers! Rejoice heathens! A day may come when the courage of men fails but it is not this day!

Whet your assault rifles with the blood of the <insert evil horde here>! We ride to battle!

And so the circle jerk continues. It is not to say I do not enjoy Halo – I do. But it is to say I tire of the way of the Fan Boi. Is there not perhaps some other game where you run around space in a suit of armor shooting aliens?

I don’t normally say this, and I don’t normally make these kinds of posts, but this particular article will be steeped in my very own opinion. You may not agree with it. It may anger you, and you may be tempted to fling your computer from the tallest rooftop you can find; or you may find yourself agreeing with every pixel that makes up every word. But I urge you: please be reasonable. Above all else, please be civil.

A few months ago, the creators of Penny Arcade produced a strip of satire centering around rape. At the barest of bone here, this particular strip sounds abhorrent. Who would find anything pertaining to rape in the least funny? A whole internet of people. Before I go into anything further, I would like to take this time to dissect the comic into its steaming, vacuous form.

Penny Arcade, as a whole, is a low-brow comic strip; perhaps even down-right juvenile. It centers around video games which, egads, is a childish activity that none should partake past the age of adolescence. The dialogue is peppered with expletives and the subject matter can only be described as poking fun at the fundamentals of life as viewed through a glass dildo. See that last sentence right there? That is Penny Arcade. Going into the depths of their satire is a lot like wading in a kiddie pool of Great Whites; eventually you will get bitten. By what? Their very own satire. Mike and Jerry have a no-holds-barred type of comedy. It is like a good Guinness – dark, very dry and enjoyed by a select few people. With all this in mind, if you continue reading through their comics, you probably have a very thick skin.

Now, onto the strip at hand. It starts out as a generic poking fun at the hero for his fallacies comic. His quest is to save only five slaves for their slavery. The sixth, or so we shall call him, rises up and speaks, “Hero! Please take me with you! Release me from this hell unending! Every morning, we are roused by savage blows. Every night, we are raped to sleep by the Dickwolves”. And then the hero’s rebuttal, “I only needed to save five slaves. Alright? Quest complete”. And suddenly we are in hairier territory than the ’70′s and ’80′s combined.

Let’s take a rational step backward. Let’s look at the context of rape in this strip. Mike and Jerry are not condoning rape; exactly the opposite: they are using rape as a guide to how bad this slave’s life is. It is not the fact that they are slaves in the first place. It is not the fact that every morning they are kicked until they wake up. But that they are also raped. And not just raped, but raped by a fictional being in a fictional universe about a fictional video game, which is all fiction anyways. But because the word “rape” was used, suddenly things are not so funny.

“But, JazFusion,”, you might say. “It’s rape. It’s one of the most abhorrent and vile acts of terror you can inflict upon a person”. Yes, I agree. “Ergo, rape is not funny. In any context”. I also agree. “So why are you defending this?!” Because the butt of the joke was not centered around rape itself; it was centered around the Hero who did nothing. Not only that he did nothing, but his callous indifference that every Hero in every video game seems to have.

So what exactly went horribly wrong in this situation? Everything.

The word “rape” and everything centered around it is a hair pin trigger across the board. Those comedians looking to push the boundaries are likely going to run into this roadblock. Of course, you can’t quite endear an entire population to you when you anger some. This whole situation could have been prevented had the strip never occurred. I will give Mike and Jerry the benefit of the doubt, though. I am usually not one to play Devil’s Advocate (Oh, who am I kidding, I revel in it) but I do not think they made this particular strip intending to offend thousands of readers.

And the situation could have been left at that. There could have been a backlash, some hurt feelings, some readers who left in a huff and PA could have called it a day. Instead, they offered this as rebuttal. While I fully understand their intent, it only served to piss off the people who were already pissed off even more.

Again, let’s take a rational step backward.

Penny Arcade is a comic strip that is free to you. You are not obligated to buy their merchandise. You are not obligated to click on their ads. You are not obligated to do anything but read their work and continue on with your day. If something offends you, you can either quit reading or continue reading; whatever you feel is the right choice.

But then something happened: a Dickwolves T-shirt was made. It has since been taken down, but its barb has been planted deep. What once was an off-color joke suddenly became a marketing machine.

And ever since, the flood gates to Hell have been loosed upon the internet with wild abandon.

There have been bodily threats made. Diarrhea from the fingers on both sides of the issue. This is what the end times look like. Over a comic. Over a piece of art.

Armageddon is the Internet.

One can always argue. And argue. And argue.

But progression is not made by arguing. It is made by truces.

I still contest Mike and Jerry are good guys. I contest there is so much more to them than the work you see them producing every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Of course, this can be said of everyone you meet; online or off.

So I shall leave you with an adage from one of my very favorite Greek philosophers:

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle” – Plato

Oh guys, did you see what I just did there?!

I have had the privilege to play the Kinect. Just like everyone else this holiday season.

Upon first playing with the Kinect, it is a mixture of awe and reverence. There isn’t really an experience like it, and I feel sorry for future generations of gamers when this becomes the default experience. My mind was racing with thoughts of “Look at me, I’m not using a controller!” and “This is what it must feel like to be in TRON!”, and I hadn’t even gotten out of the main menu.

It really is targeted to families and casual gamers, which I am (sort of) happy to see. While I do not wish all of my gaming experiences to be through the Kinect, I am happy for what it is.

I’ve played most of the launch titles. Well, most that matter in any case.

Kinect Sports is a must-have for children and parties. Indeed, my son loves Kinect Bowling, and I picture him a Little Lebowski maybe one day (not really). The track and field sports I have problem with, but mostly because I live on the third floor in an apartment building. I’m fairly sure my neighbors downstairs would not love for me to be running in place any time.

Kinectimals is a fun and cute game, obviously targeted at little girls. I hope to see them expand into more animals than just big cats. And I freaking love cats.

Kinect Adventures was just so-so. I felt as if I were transported to some back-packing alternate universe where everyone does stupid things like avoiding obstacles and dodgeball instead of climbing mountains and eating scorpions.

Dance Central was surprisingly fun. I love to dance, but I scoffed at first thinking it would be stupid. It has some amazing body tracking abilities, though sometimes I don’t feel as if I’m actually doing the moves correctly. I’m an avid belly dancer, rather than a hip-hip/pop dancer, so what I would love to see is a belly dancing game for the Kinect.

And of course there is the obligatory sex simulator for the Kinect that won’t be coming to the US market. Or perhaps any market. But watch on in NSFW territory as a creepy faceless man manipulates a disembodied hand to what is supposed to be foreplay. Though I guess it really does accurately simulate the first awkward 10 minutes of any soft core porn.

All in all, I am very hopeful for the Kinect and I see it becoming a booming business venture for Mircosoft.

~JazFusion

Peter Molyneux almost ruined my marriage. I was 6 months pregnant with my son and was supposed to be on relative bed rest when my husband introduced me to Fable to help stave off my boredom. Needless to say, I became consumed. Had I given birth to my son while playing Fable, I probably would not have noticed.

I have been a fan of Peter Molyneux’s games ever since I played Dungeon Keeper. Transitioning from playing the beloved, but ever-noble Warcraft II to the ever-more-sinister Dungeon Keeper was a delight. I loved slapping around my Imps and spawning Dark Mistresses. What more could a girl want?

When Fable II finally came out, I fell in love again. Though I felt it was the game Fable should have been, I was not disappointed. Relatively soon after my love affair with Fable II ended, I heard the news of Fable III making an appearance. The King/Queen on the throne! More children! More hero poses! More gambling! More debauchery! I was elated.

Until I began playing it.

First of all, let me begin by saying that while I did enjoy Fable III very much, I still felt myself wishing I were playing Fable II. It seemed to be more cohesive and immersive than the latest installment. And where was my freaking gambling?! I loved playing Fortune’s Tower.

In any case, you begin the game as the Prince/Princess of the Hero from Fable II. Your brother is on the throne and he has been a terrible tyrant. Of course, you join a Revolution to bring him down with the help of some of your friends; namely, your dog. Albion is on the cusp of an Industrial Revolution, as well. Which makes for an interesting back-drop of stories and assorted morals you can advance, should you choose to do.

Which is really what the game boils down to: choices. There are no real innovations to the game. I guess it feels like jumping back in the sack with an ex-lover: you kind of know what you’re doing, and it feels sort of right, but that guilt starts to sink in, and you start to wonder – is what I’m doing right? Is this okay? But of course it is. It’s just a game, you dolt. But then you worry you’ve been spending far too much time with this game versus the other one, and suddenly you find yourself hitting things and then next thing you know you’re sobbing, “Baby, you know I didn’t mean it”.

…..no? That doesn’t sound like you? Ahem. Well then. Onward and upward.

The only other legitimate complaint I had and that almost kept me from completing the game was the goddamn bugs. Was it too much to ask Lionhead to make a game playable enough to at least finish a game without having to start completely over? Apparently so.

It all began when I started the “Gone, But Not Forgotten” quest. I’m on a mission to kill some Hollow Men, and then I get stuck in a room. I can’t advance, and I can’t go back. I waited about a week before a patch was released. No dice. I started over, but then I ran into many more problems along the way. Fortunately, they were not game stopping problems, but at one point I couldn’t work any more jobs, and then at another point I couldn’t hear Jasper anymore. And who doesn’t want to listen to John Cleese’s witty quips?

All in all, I was glad to have played, and finished, the game. But I felt it was at a cost to my sanity for surviving all the bugs. I felt it was worth the investment, but then I traded it in and got $37.99 back for it.

So!

~JazFusion

“I said baby, you know I’m gonna leave you”

If there is one aspect in gaming that tends to be glossed over, it’s the music. This has always disturbed me in particular; as if I needed more fodder for my hatred of the music industry giant it has become. I tend to take it as a personal slight. After all, why shouldn’t music get the respect it deserves, regardless of the medium?

Both my parents were very musical people. My mother taught me how to sing, and my father taught me to play piano. I have fond memories of sharing music with both of them. Now, I never became the next Liberace or Callas, but I did grow up with a fond appreciation for a variety of music.

Before the advent of greater technology and a more cinematic way of presenting games, there were MIDI’s. I think most of us remember those good old days, and think back fondly on those times when music in gaming sounded more like a robot than a full symphonic, or even just a piano. Whereas our imagination can fill in the blanks visually, it is much harder to accomplish aurally. After all, our most valued sense is sight.

Remember SoundBlaster? I do. I remember coming home with my father one day in early 1996, Warcraft 2 in tow. It was an exciting prospect and we both opened the box ever so gingerly, as if the sanctity of the moment would be smashed by our clumsy appendages. The game survived, however, and I watched in awe as he loaded the disc into the drive. What wonders would await us? I could barely contain my excitement.

The wonder of the moment was dispelled when we ran into a problem with our soundcard – there was no sound. Nada. Kaput. Nyet. It was out of date, as far as Warcaft 2 was concerned. Frustrated, and after many expletives said, my father packed us off to the nearest CompUSA to buy a brand new SoundBlaster. I forget what make, model or what have you. I was twelve at the time and only concerned with ever playing the game. We eventually did, adding many Father-Daughter bonding hours killing the Horde, and sometimes each other.

Over the years, music in gaming has become more and more polished. We, of course, always have those memories of nostalgia. Even today, upon hearing the Legend of Zelda theme, I begin weeping immediately. It is an exciting time to be a composer in gaming today. I have many songs of video game music I listen to frequently (and even as I type this, I am listening to a beautiful piano composition from a game). More people are sitting up and taking notice. Soundtracks to games are garnering attention, and the quality of those compositions can be put on the same level as movie soundtracks.

We associate so much more emotional impact with sound, and it can be argued that could be due to the fact our hearing is much more advanced than our vision as newborns fresh from the womb. But whatever the reason, I will continue to download game soundtracks and enjoy them, not merely as “game music”, but as solid masterpieces to add to my growing library of compositions.

I’d like to kick things off with something I want to make ongoing: my pick for a game of the month. Because I do not have access to a plethora of funds nor a heavy repertoire of games at the moment, I’m going to spotlight games I think you should play. They might be games that have been out for a while, or games you’ve likely already played. The bottom line reamins, however: I like them.

The first on my list is Darksiders, the action-adventure game from up and coming Vigil Games. For a young company, they already have an impressive résumé. Owned by THQ, formed by Joe Madureira and David Adams, it can only mean one thing for the future: awesome.

For the present, their break-out game Darksiders has captured the attention of gamers. Set in a literal post-Apocalyptic world, you are War – the first Horseman of the Apocalypse. Blamed for the untimely destruction of the world, and stripped of his rank, War sets out on a quest for vengeance. Which appropriately means, you will kill some bitches.

What sets Darksiders apart, for me at least, is the homage to the comic book industry the game exudes; it comes as no surprise since Mr. Madureira himself was a comic book artist. But everything from the art direction, to the voice acting, to the over-the-top finishers War performs seems to have sprung to life from the pages of a comic book.

The mechanics of the game are no less glorified. War himself is built like an Adeptus Astartes, albeit weilding a gigantic sword dubbed “Chaoseater”, but he moves as fluidly as water down a stream. The combat system seems at first glance to be a button masher, but mastery over the system proves to be a tactical and enjoyable experience. I found the Zelda-esque dungeon puzzles refreshing, rather than repetitive, and can only count it as another asset to the game itself.

The score to the game is something often overlooked by reviewers, as with most games, but it is driven, moving and subtle precisely where it needs to be.

There is very little to complain about Darksiders. I had eschewed it for a time, but it has proven to be a worthwhile purchase. I look forward to what else Vigil Games has in store.
